About
Contemporary artists working in human-centered and experiential forms are invited to submit a proposal for a 4–8-week artist residency at the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park, including documentation of previous work.
Overview
Grand Canyon Conservancy seeks contemporary artists whose work is human-centered and experiential to live on-site at the South Rim of Grand Canyon and deliver experiences that deepen the public's relationship with place. Three artists will be selected by a peer-review panel for a 4–8-week residency in 2027. Artist proposals are selected for the maturity of the artist's work, demonstrable success with the public, and potential impact on the interpretation, preservation, and celebration of Grand Canyon.
Who can apply
International artists working in immersive, interactive, or social forms are eligible. The program is committed to supporting a broad range of voices, especially those frequently underrepresented. Teams of two are permitted.
Residency details
Selected artists will live and work on site at the South Rim for 4–8 weeks. Artists are encouraged to provide an average of two meaningful public interactions for every week on-site. Artists may indicate preferred dates and potential scheduling conflicts, though not all can be accommodated. The program typically does not host residents between December 15 and February 15 due to weather challenges.
What you'll receive
Selected artists will receive a weekly stipend of $800, a travel subsidy of $500, up to $300 for project supplies, free private or shared accommodations (accessible and family-friendly housing available if required), special park access, staff support, marketing exposure, and opportunities to work with Grand Canyon School and engage with Conservancy leadership and donors.
Submission deadline
Applications must be submitted by 2026-07-15. Application materials may not be submitted by email or after the deadline.
Application materials
Submit general information (ethnicity, gender, online presence, accessibility needs, experience with Grand Canyon/Southwest, preferred residency dates), artist materials (short bio, artist statement, CV/resume optional, press/media optional), a residency project proposal with detailed description and project evolution plans, and documentation of previous work (5–15 portfolio images, up to 3 video/audio clips at 3 minutes max each, and optional text up to 3 poems and/or 10 pages prose).
Portfolio requirements
Provide up to 20 portfolio items total: 5–15 images with titles, dates, medium, and descriptions; up to 3 video or audio clips (3 minutes max each) with titles, dates, medium, and descriptions.
