Apply for a two-month solo residency at the James Castle House in Boise, Idaho, where you will create new works in response to the historic site and its landscape, and participate in public programming.

The James Castle House invites emerging and mid-career artists in any creative field to apply for a two-month solo residency at the historic site where James Castle lived and worked for the last 46 years of his life. Artists will explore the house, its history, and surrounding landscape, and respond through creation of new works. Residents will share their creative practice with the community through workshops, open studios, and presentations.

  • Private furnished living quarters
  • 24-hour studio access
  • $4,000.00 stipend for living expenses and supplies
  • Private studio with access to large format printer/plotter, etching press, large sinks, washer and dryer
  • Participate in several public events, including workshops, open studios, and presentations
  • Donate a selected piece of work reflective of your time at the James Castle House to the City of Boise collection
  • Reside alone; this is a solo residency
  • Emerging or mid-career artists in any creative field (visual/new media artists, poets, writers, musicians, dancers, metalsmiths, printmakers, etc.)
  • 18 years or older
  • Legally able to work in the United States
  • Must be able to pass a thorough background check

The site cannot accommodate loud or especially messy processes due to property limitations and proximity to neighbors. If special equipment or facilities are required, the James Castle House will work to find partnerships within the Boise community. Artist is responsible for travel and shipping expenses.
