Professional artists and artist teams are invited to submit work samples for the creation of permanent public artworks (murals, sculptures, or installations) at two Downtown Hampton sites, with budgets of $100,000 and $150,000.

The Hampton Commission on the Arts invites professional artists and artist teams to submit entries for permanent public artworks in Downtown Hampton. The initiative aims to enhance the city's cultural landscape through landmark pieces that celebrate Hampton's history, identity, and spirit while enhancing public spaces.

  • Site A: Settlers Landing Parking Garage (near Hampton History Museum and Virginia Air & Space Science Center). Exterior murals with potential interior stairwell treatments. Budget: $100,000.
  • Site B: Corner of Queens Way and Kings Way (next to bank building, pedestrian corridor hub). Sculptural or installation-based artworks ideal for this location. Budget: $150,000.
  • Artists may apply for one or both locations.
  • 5–8 images of past work (required)
  • Original, site-specific designs at appropriate scale for visibility from multiple vantage points
  • Concept (optional at this stage; finalists will develop concepts further)

Open to professional artists or artist teams, age 18 or older, legally authorized to work in the United States, with demonstrated experience in public art or other large-scale projects.

Acceptable forms include murals, sculptures, installations (interactive or kinetic), and integrated landscape features. Designs must use durable, weather-resistant materials (metal, stone, ceramics, resilient mixed media) and reflect Hampton's history, diversity, innovation, and coastal character. All proposals must adhere to community standards of decency and respect; profanity, vulgarity, and offensive or discriminatory content are strictly prohibited.

2026-07-17. Limit: 1 submission per artist.

Submissions will be evaluated on quality of past work, demonstrated technical capability, and alignment with Hampton's identity and the theme 'From the Sea to the Stars: Past, Present, Possible.' Work samples are the primary consideration for identifying finalists invited to interviews and concept development.
