The 2027 Shiro Oni Studio Artist in Residence Program invites artists of all disciplines to apply for a 6-week residency in Onishi, Gunma, Japan, where groups of 9 artists live and work together in a mountain setting.

Shiro Oni Studio Artist in Residence Program offers 6-week residencies in the small mountain town of Onishi, Gunma prefecture, Japan. Groups of 9 artists live and work together away from urban distractions, with a group exhibition held the final weekend of the residency.

  • Application Period: July 1 – September 1, 2026
  • First round of interviews: September 2026
  • Acceptance letters sent: December 2026
  • Residency: 2027 (6 weeks)

Open to artists based anywhere in the world at any stage of career. Artists may apply individually or as a team. Spring and Fall groups are reserved for artists working with clay and the anagama kiln. Early Summer and Later Summer groups welcome artists of all disciplines, including clay.

  • Private bedroom in shared housing on campus
  • 24/7 access to private studio space
  • Woodshop with dedicated equipment (tablesaw, bandsaw, router table, jointer, planer, wood vises and table)
  • Ceramic facilities with electric wheels, clay mixers, gas kiln, and clay/glaze supplies
  • Exhibition and performance space with piano
  • Bicycles for local transportation
  • Translation support provided
  • Free storage room with leftover materials from previous artists

Shiro Oni Studio covers: private bedroom, all building utilities, 24/7 studio access, woodshop, ceramic facilities, translation support, bicycles, and exhibition and flyer printing expenses.

Travel expenses, food costs, certain workshop fees, and art materials. The ceramic facilities have clays and glazes available to use or purchase; natural materials like bamboo from surrounding mountains and wood from local lumber mills are available.

Residency fee: 450,000 Japanese Yen (JPY) for 6 weeks.
