Surel's Place invites visual, literary, multimedia, and performance artists of any career stage to apply for month-long residencies in a one-bedroom home with studio space.

Surel's Place offers month-long residencies in a one-bedroom home with a spacious studio for artists aged 25 and older. Located in the heart of the Surel Mitchell Live-Work-Create District in Boise, the residency provides a quiet place to create within walking distance of downtown. The program is open to visual, literary, multimedia, and performance artists at any career stage. Applicants should approach the residency with purpose and intention.

Open to animation, architecture, augmented reality, book arts, ceramics, choreography, costume/fashion design, criticism, dance, digital fabrication, digital media, documentary, drawing, electronic arts, environmental arts, fiction, film, fine metals/jewelry, graphic design, illustration, industrial design, installation arts, interdisciplinary arts, literary/nonfiction, mixed media, moving image, multimedia arts, music, new genres, opera, painting, paper arts, performance art, photography, playwriting, poetry, printmaking, public art, screenwriting, sculpture, sound art, storytelling, symphony, textile/fiber arts, theater, virtual reality, and writing.

  • Living expenses stipend: $100 per week
  • Travel/material stipend: $300
  • Private housing (one-bedroom home with spacious studio)
  • No residency fees
  • Private studio with specialized equipment (painting workspace with easels, printmaking workspaces, fiber arts workspace, textiles workspace, etc.)

Artists may be asked to donate a work of art, participate in public programming and open studio with fellow residents, give an artist talk or presentation, or lead a workshop for the public.

All completed applications are reviewed by experienced and accomplished artists in their own discipline. Reviewers assess candidates' work, intention, process, specific proposals for Surel's Place, and access to artistic support and amplification of their voices. Surel's Place staff make final determinations based on these recommendations, availability, and timing. Applications are reviewed through a lens of antiracism.
